Ground Handling Strikes at Tenerife South Airport Easter 2026

Updated 28/3/2026

Important update

Good news: The looming strike action has been cancelled after an agreement was reached.

Passengers scheduled to travel through Tenerife South Airport (TFS) during the upcoming Easter period should be aware of planned industrial action involving ground handling personnel. While strikes can naturally cause concern for holidaymakers, understanding the schedule and the measures in place will help ensure your transit through the airport remains as seamless as possible.

The dispute involves staff from Menzies, an important handling agent at Tenerife South Airport. Handling staff are responsible for vital “behind-the-scenes” operations, including baggage transit, aircraft refuelling, and passenger check-in services.

Scheduled Dates for Industrial Action

The strikes are strategically timed to coincide with Semana Santa (Holy Week), one of the busiest periods for the Canary Islands. While the first two days of action on 28th and 29th March have been suspended, the industrial action is now set to commence on 2nd April. Under the updated schedule, full 24-hour stoppages will take place from 2nd to 6th April, covering the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. Should the labour dispute remain unresolved, the duration of the strike will extend to every Saturday and Sunday until 31 December 2026.

Impact on Flight Operations

It is important to note that Spanish “Minimum Service” laws are very robust regarding air travel. These regulations mandate that a high percentage of flights must operate to protect the mobility of passengers. Consequently, the vast majority of flights are expected to depart and arrive as scheduled.

The primary impact for travellers will likely be operational congestion. You may encounter longer queues at check-in desks, extended waiting times for luggage at the arrivals carousel, and potential delays during the boarding process.

Practical Advice for Passengers

To mitigate the impact of these disruptions on your travel experience, we recommend the following:

  1. Monitor your airline’s communications: Ensure your contact details are up to date with your airline. They will provide the most accurate, real-time information regarding your specific flight.
  2. Early arrival: Aim to arrive at the terminal approximately three hours before your scheduled departure. While it is tempting to arrive even earlier, doing so can contribute to unnecessary terminal crowding.
  3. Prioritise cabin baggage: Where possible, consider travelling with hand luggage only. This allows you to bypass the bag-drop counters and avoid waiting at the luggage carousels upon arrival.
  4. Confirm travel insurance: Review your policy to ensure you have adequate cover for travel delays, providing extra peace of mind during your trip.
  5. Be patient with staff: The employees working during the strike are often under extra pressure. A little kindness goes a long way in keeping the atmosphere at the gate pleasant for everyone.
